Jewelry Care Guide

Jewelry Care Guide

To make the shine and brilliance of your Goldmariie Jewelry last a long time, it is essential to store it safely and clean it regularly. But not every gemstone and not every metal requires the same care. We put together a care guide with instructions for all our precious metals and gemstones to make your beauties last.

This care guide is for maintaining the beauty of your jewelry. If you are interested in how to recharge your gemstones and cleanse them energetically, you will find instructions here

In general, we advise removing your jewelry

  • while doing labor-intensive work.
  • when swimming in salty water. While Stainless Steel pieces and more robust gemstones can be worn when swimming in saltwater, most of our jewelry does not like it at all. If you plan to go swimming/diving in saltwater for more than a few minutes, we strongly recommend removing all jewelry.
  • during your morning routine and before you get ready for bed. Most of our jewelry is wearable in freshwater, but the chemicals in cosmetics like hairspray, perfume, lotions, etc. can cause decolorization or tarnishing.

Silver and other precious metals are delicate. And some gemstones are harder than others. Always store your jewelry with some distance between them or in separate departments in your case to avoid scratching.

925 Sterling Silver

Sterling Silver can be worn in freshwater as long as it is pure and does not contain any chemicals. To maintain its brilliance, we recommend taking off your rings before washing your hands with soap. Some hand wash may contain sulfur that can cause your Silver Jewelry to tarnish. Please keep in mind that swimming pools and water in spas usually are chlorinated. Hence please always remove your jewelry before taking a swim to ensure the silver will remain shiny.

Silver reacts with oxygen. If you store your item for a while without wearing it, it will also tarnish. To avoid this effect, you can put a silica gel pack inside your jewelry box. It absorbs moisture and slows down tarnishing.

Should your Silver Jewelry tarnish despite everything, you can clean it easily with a microfiber or a silver cleaning cloth. To remove any residue, put your Silver Jewelry in a mix of tap water and mild soap (sulfur-free) and let it sit for 15 minutes. For extra shine, e.g. around prongs, you can give it a very gentle brush with a jewelry brush or an old soft toothbrush. Don’t use medium or hard brushes as they can cause scratches on the metal.

Rose Gold Vermeil

Rose Gold Vermeil - as well as Rose Gold- needs special care. It is a delicate metal because it contains a small amount of copper which is highly reactive with its surroundings. But if you follow this guide, your items will look shiny and beautiful for a long time.

The best way to clean your Rose Gold Vermeil jewelry is to polish it with a soft microfibre cloth. If you have to use water, dip the cloth in water (if necessary, add just a little bit of mild soap that does not contain sulfur) and polish your jewelry instead of actually putting it into the water. Don’t use silver cleaning cloths for Vermeil Jewelry.

Always keep Rose Gold Vermeil Jewelry away from cosmetics or aggressive soap. Remove it before applying beauty products. Then wait until they are evaporated or completely absorbed before you put on your jewelry to avoid tarnishing.

If you store Rose Gold Vermeil Jewelry for a while without wearing it, it will tarnish. To avoid this effect, you can put a silica gel pack inside your jewelry box. It absorbs moisture and slows down tarnishing.

Even though vermeil is a lot thicker than gold plated items, it can wear off when not handled carefully. Therefore remove your rings before doing heavy work or exercise. Especially as sweat like chemicals can cause tarnishing.

Yellow Gold Vermeil

Like Rose Gold Vermeil, Yellow Gold Vermeil should not be worn excessively in water.

The best way to clean it is to polish it with a soft microfibre cloth. If you have to use water, dip the cloth in water (if necessary, add mild soap that does not contain sulfur) and polish your jewelry instead of actually putting it into the water. Don’t use silver cleaning cloths for vermeil jewelry.

Always keep Yellow Gold Vermeil Jewelry away from cosmetics or aggressive soap. Remove it before applying beauty products. Then wait until they are evaporated or fully absorbed before you put on your jewelry to avoid tarnishing. Yellow Gold Vermeil rarely turns dark, but it still can happen.

If you store Yellow Gold Vermeil jewelry for a while without wearing it, it will tarnish. To avoid this effect, you can put a silica gel pack inside your jewelry box. It absorbs moisture and slows down tarnishing.

Even though vermeil is a lot thicker than gold plated items, it can wear off when not handled with care. Therefore remove your rings before doing heavy work or exercise.

316L Stainless Steel

316L Stainless Steel is a very robust option when it comes to precious metal. You can wear it in freshwater, spas, swimming pools, and during your workout.

You can clean your Stainless Steel Jewelry with soap and soft cloths or brushes. Please don’t use hard brushes as this might cause scratches on the metal after all.

Moonstone

Moonstone is a relatively soft gemstone and can get scratches more easily than other stones might. Also, keep Moonstone away from salt or water containing chlorine. It’s best to take it off while exercising, taking a swim, during housekeeping, or when doing other labor-intensive work.

To clean Moonstone and preserve its shine, you can wash it with water and mild soap. If that’s not enough, use a soft microfiber cloth and gently rub off any residue.

Opal

Opal is stunning and has a unique, extravagant sparkle. But it is very delicate and pretty much the diva among the gemstones. To avoid discoloration, you should avoid any contact with water. Opal can absorb liquids that can cause a visible color change. Once that happens, there is no turning back. Therefore always take off Opal Jewelry when washing your hands, go swimming, taking a shower, etc. Opal also does not like chemicals, soap, or any other kind of cosmetics.

Like Moonstone it is one of the softer gemstones. To avoid scratching or cracks, take off Opal Jewelry when exercising, housekeeping, or when doing other labor-intensive work.

To clean your opal jewelry, use a soft, dry microfiber cloth and give the stone a gentle rub.

Store it away from heating, direct sunlight, vases, and any vessels containing water or other liquids.

Rose Quartz, Amethyst, Garnet, Citrine, and Sunstone

Clean these gemstones with water and mild soap or a soft cloth. If necessary, you can use a soft brush to get rid of stains and other residues.

Named gemstones usually don’t react with water or regular hand wash. You can wear them when taking a shower. However, please remove your jewelry when using cosmetics that contain chemicals like hairspray or perfume as it can cause discoloration of the stone.

Also, the color of natural crystals can fade when exposed to direct sunlight for a long time. It is best to take off your gemstone jewelry while sunbathing to avoid decolorization.
